The Awards Ceremony of the 12th Start-Up@Singapore (S@S); Singapore’s biggest business plan competition will be held on the 21st of May 2011, Saturday, from 12.15 pm to 5.00 pm. It is the final and biggest event of 12th S@S and a platform for the culmination of the finals of the business plan competition. The event will showcase the best business ideas that came out of the competition this year as well as prominent entrepreneurs as speakers.

There is considerable interest among policy-makers in measuring the entrepreneurial character of nations. A number of approaches and indices have been proposed for the study of the question. But what is an ‘entrepreneurial economy’? In this talk, Professor Erkko Autio reviews different approaches to measuring the entrepreneurial character of nations and discusses their merits and weaknesses. He will conclude by proposing a policy-oriented conceptual definition for the concept of an ‘entrepreneurial nation’.

GCL and NEC will jointly conduct the one and a half-day Social Business Lab from the afternoon of 16 March to 17 March 2011. The aim of the Social Business Lab is to help budding social entrepreneurs learn how to develop innovative, sustainable social business solutions to solve social problems.
Through a series of intensive, hands-on team-learning activities, including case studies, experience sharing and brainstorming sessions, participants gain insights into social businesses. Furthermore, participants will receive mentoring and feedback from a panel of experienced resource persons assembled by GCL and NEC.
Participants will be charged a small fee to cover part of the expenses. Participating teams with the most promising social business ideas will be invited to further develop their innovations at NEC’s social business incubator.

Counterculture in the Economic World is a public lecture on social business on the morning of 16 March 2011 is open to the public. It will be delivered by Hans Reitz, the founder of GCL and creative advisor of Nobel Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. GCL has advised and worked with many global business enterprises on using the social business model to address social problems. There will be a networking lunch after the public lecture.
